Top 10 Cyborg Movies on VHS

The following is an unranked list of my favorite science fiction movies on VHS that feature cyborgs specifically.

Class of 1999 (1990)
Woman with tageting reticle on her face

In the future, high schools are violent prisons and the new breed of teachers are cyborgs. The cyborgs are programmed to administer lethal corrective action if deemed necessary. At first, the students are unaware that the three new teachers at Seattle’s Kennedy High School are different. However, soon they realize that they are dealing with decommissioned military cyborgs that have been given the authority to kill.

Class of 1999 is a cynical look at what crime rates and over-publicized delinquency would look like if it were carried to the extreme. The kids should have listened to Robocop and stayed out of trouble.

Automatic (1995)
Cyborg

Robgen Industries’ newest security system, the ‘J Series Automatic’, is an android programmed to protect humans from violent attacks. The android, called J269,  is supposed to be safe. However, the android accidentally kills a human executive while trying to save a woman from being brutalized.

Because the situation would cause unwanted negative attention, the android’s creator decides to send in a hit squad. Their objective is to kill both J269 and the female victim, Nora Rochester.

Prototype (1983)
Cyborg eating dinner

It’s the classic tale of a government-funded project being used for nefarious purposes and the machine’s creator, who sees himself as it’s father, fighting back.

Robocop (1987)
Cyborg cop

Excessively violent and extremely critical of free enterprise, Robocop is a classic 80s action movie with an eye on Corporate America.

Deadly Friend (1986)
Wes Craven's Deadly Friend

After his friend Samantha is killed by her abusive father, the new kid in town, Paul Conway, attempts to save her. That is to say, he brings her back to life by implanting robotic microchips into her brain. Consequently, Sam operates as a deadly android that is out of control, and taking revenge, starting with her father and a really grouchy neighbor played by the amazing Anne Ramsey.

Deadly Friend is a lesser-known teen horror film from Wes Craven, released two years after A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

Alien (1979)
Blown up cyborg

In terms of androids, the film features an important character named Ash, a Hyperdyne Systems 120-A/2 android. The movie does a great job of showing us that Ash is a bit different. For example, Ash is regarded as inferior by almost every other character in subtle ways without telling us outright that he is an android. As a result, the scenes of the crew struggling to subdue the android once they realize its motivation are extremely intense.

We find out later that Ash has had a secret agenda and seems to almost feel pity for the unlikelihood of any of the humans surviving the xenomorph on board. That is, if androids can really feel at all.

The Terminator (1984)
TECH NOIR

The original Terminator movie featured excellent scenes of human vs android action amid Los Angeles in the 1980s. It also had great dialogue, a sense of humanity, and an unforgettable ending. The sequel, T2 (1991), was a blockbuster for doing it all again but bigger.

Eliminators (1986)
Dude with a robotic eye on his face

A former pilot teams up with the scientist responsible for his android technology, her pet robot Spot, a riverboat guide and a martial arts warrior.

Universal Soldier (1992)
Van Damme with a cyborg thing on his head

Two Vietnam vets who are killed in action are resurrected in the future as cyborg soldiers.

Nemesis (1992)
Lady shotting a shotgun

Alex, a burned out LA cyborg cop, is forced by his commissioner to find his former cyborg partner who’s about to deliver sensitive data to terrorists. Nemesis will entertain fans of cyberpunk science fiction and action films in general.

It’s the beginning of what has become a five film series with the most recent movie, Nemesis 5: The New Model, being released in 2017. All the Nemesis movies after the first one were released straight to video and are not highly rated by any means.
