VHS Legacy is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of the physical media format called Video Home System. This format is alive and well, and it’s becoming more apparent why physical media has such lasting importance. If you’re here, you already know the reasons why you love VHS so much and what it symbolizes.
If you’d like more information, one place to start is with the Blog section of this website. You can also follow the adventures of VHS Legacy on Instagram or Facebook. VHS Legacy also has an ongoing project in creating a digital archive of VHS movies and tapes. A select few video tapes are available to stream on VHS Legacy’s YouTube channel and on the Internet Archive.
Watch VHS
The Watch VHS section of the website features a selection of movies that are available to stream. All VHS uploads have been converted to digital format from a private collection of tapes.
For those who are wondering how a VHS tape gets digitized, I use an Elgato Video Capture USB capture device to record the RCA or S-Video video signals. I have tried other devices, but in my experience this one does the best job of eliminating ‘Hanover Bars’. Those are the pesky horizontal lines that occur with some video capture hardware. The name Hanover refers to the German city in which the PAL system developer was located.
