The 1980s saw a slew of vampire movies that were hybrid comedies, probably due to the over-saturation of vampire movies from the decade prior that took themselves too seriously. Even with an element of comedy thrown in, these movies stand out as exceptional vampire flicks.
Fright Night (1985 Columbia Tristar Home Video)
This film is about as self-aware and meta as they come. When a teenager discovers that his new neighbor is a vampire, he turns to an actor in a television horror show for help before the vampire can seduce his mother. This movie and The Lost Boys are very similar in that they feature children trying to protect their single moms from the wiles of modern 80s vampires. This is very different from the middle-aged protagonists of Dracula films from the previous decade.
